Both of his parents are members of the Holy Order of the Priestess, an order dedicated to protecting the Cathedral and doing the wishes of the Gods of Light. The order is a military one, but usually prefers to protect rather than attack. As Priten grew up, he was trained by his parents to be a future member of the order. He was officially recruited at 16, and immediately showed potential. He was taught to protect others and himself, but also to help construct parts of the Cathedral, and to be a reliable and morally upright person. Last year, unbeknowst to him, the Priestess and the High Priests held a meeting about the new dangers facing the world. A priest spoke of a new threat no-one yet knew of, but that could destroy the world within the next 50 years. A plan was made to fight this threat, and one of the priests nominated Priten, the finest of the younger warriors, as the one who could execute the plan. It had to be an inexperienced warrior, as one with more experience fighting the demons would know too well how to avoid them, and the priests could not divulge the plan to the one set to execute it. Priten was told a few months ago that he was to be sent on an important mission, but that no-one could tell him exactly how to go about it. He would get only vague hints of what to do. The Cathedral psychologists hoped to know well enough how to craft these hints for him to do what's necessary. It's a long shot, but the Priestess seems to trust the plan. And when the Priestess believes in something, everyone follows it. His first hint was to "go into shadow, to find light". He took it literally and went to Shadow Port. A man noticed his strong but inexperienced look, and offered him a job to retreive an object. "Is it a light object?" "Depends on your definition of light." And without needing further explanation, Priten was convinced that was the quest he had set out to do. 2 of the 3 seeers at the Priestess' court sighed of relief to see the plan going well. The other was focusing on how Priten had just lost 50 gold pieces to at least 5 independent pickpockets. He just sighed.
